The Rule of Thirds and photographic composition

Here you will find a web site to explain the Rule of Thirds, which is an easily identifiable technique used in TV Drama film making. We see this early in the course in the extract from Bleak House.

Digital Photography School

The article here considers another more ancient compositional rule, 'The Fibbonaci Spiral' or 'Golden Mean,' and links it to the theory of Phi (for those who have read The Da Vinci code).

Kinoeye TV Drama Glossary of Camera Terms and more

This link goes to a media teacher's blog that has a useful list of cinematography terms with explanations. If you follow the links under the sub-title 'Textual Analysis Hub Links' you will find useful pages on camera shots, movement and framing. There is also a discussion of mise-en-scene which takes the subject to a more academic level and examines how different media theorists have argued about how to define the term 'mise-en-scene.'
