The Rule of Thirds and photographic composition
Here you will find a web site to explain the Rule of Thirds, which is an easily identifiable technique used in TV Drama film making. We see this early in the course in the extract from Bleak House.
Digital Photography School
The article here considers another more ancient compositional rule, 'The Fibbonaci Spiral' or 'Golden Mean,' and links it to the theory of Phi (for those who have read The Da Vinci code).
Kinoeye TV Drama Glossary of Camera Terms and more
This link goes to a media teacher's blog that has a useful list of cinematography terms with explanations. If you follow the links under the sub-title 'Textual Analysis Hub Links' you will find useful pages on camera shots, movement and framing. There is also a discussion of mise-en-scene which takes the subject to a more academic level and examines how different media theorists have argued about how to define the term 'mise-en-scene.'

Postmodern fighter pilots...
The RAF pilots from the Armstrong and Miller Show can be said to show the postmodern blending of one cultural form with another from the recent past, using the colllision for an ironic and comedic effect. This is perhaps an example of what Jencks calls the 'eclectic mixture of any tradition with that of its immediate past.' In the sketch that appears below, is the modern youth culture of the voices represented more positively or more negatively than the 1940s war film culture? Is this sketch homage or parody?

Example Grid-of-9 for a film trailer
When you analyse film trailers on your blog for your research and planning section, the grid of 9 is a helpful format. It links to a technique used on the Art of the Title website. Discipline yourself to keep your writing within the space available (do not allow the grid to expand enough to go on to 2 pages) and you are only allowed 9 screen shots from the trailer. You need to begin referring to theory and theorists at this stage. This is an example grid, analysing the trailer for Silent Hill.

Comparing a Teaser trailer with a Theatrical Trailer
The trailers for the original Silent Hill (dir. Gans, 2006) show an interesting comparison between the 2 minute, 30 second Theatrical Trailer
and the 30 second Teaser Trailer. It is interesting to see what has been kept and what has been left out and how the features that remain mark the USP of the actual film.

iTunes Movie Trailers
The iTunes Movie Trailer site is a great place to look at trailers by genre. You can see trailers for the latest releases but also you can sort the trailers by genre and see at a glance some of the more obvious genre features.

If a female reader were to aspire to have this appearance, she would wish to achieve something that never existed in the first place. How does this fit with Baudrillard's theories of simulacra and hyperreality?
